On the heels of a $30 million manufacturing expansion in Boulder and its hometown of Durham, North Carolina, biotechnology company KBI Biopharma has completed its latest acquisition: A Colorado company.

Louisville, Colorado-based contract services organization Elion Labs marks the fourth acquisition for KBI since February.

“Certainly, we will continue to grow,” says Timothy Kelly, president and CEO of KBI, contract development and manufacturing company, adding that KBI’s recent expansions have been “fairly opportunistic.”

KBI has known about Elion since the company started back in 2015, he says, adding that KBI and Elion have been neighbors – and competitors – in Colorado.

Elion was founded following biopharmaceutical giant Amgen’s closure of operations in Colorado, and KBI also hired talent in the wake of the closure, says Kelly.

Now, the acquisition of Elion – including all of its 20 employees – will aid in bolstering KBI’s cornerstone analytics capabilities at its locations in Colorado, along with Durham and Research Triangle Park; The Woodlands, Texas; and San Diego.

Elion co-founders John Gabrielson, Brent Kendrick and Kelly Arthur will continue to oversee operations at the existing Colorado facility, according to KBI. Financial terms of the acquisition are not being disclosed.
